Have Word and EndNote open with the library you wish to use

  • Highlight the reference in EndNote that you wish to insert into Word, copy it (Ctrl-c)
  • switch to Word and paste (Ctrl-v).

You now have a temporary placeholder for the citation that looks like this {Smith, 1987 #28}. It will not look like this in the final document. The area between the curly brackets contains hidden codes and creates a permanent link between EndNote and Word.

You must have these placeholders for EndNote to use, for when you finally format your bibliography.

To finally formatting your bibliography

  • In Word, go to Tools > EndNote X2 > Format Bibliography
  • Check that you have chosen the Output style that you want
  • Clicking on the Browse button will give you a menu with many more output options.
  • There may be a slight delay but the Bibliography will appear at the very end of your document.
